Let's invite play with these beautiful colourful blocks and a mirror!

A simple invitation to play with a mirror and blocks

This was such a simple invitation to play that I set up last week for Miss 3. I sat with her while she played and showed her how to create towers on the mirror with some of the lucite blocks.

Later in the day after she had lost interest in building I added in some little figurines, which drew her interest into playing again. Then I showed her how to stack the rainbow window blocks, which she really enjoyed.

Mirror Play Idea for Kids - Building with Lucite Blocks

What we used:

• Child safe acrylic mirror - Educating Kids

• Rainbow blocks - Tickit Education

• Lucite cubes - Bauspiel brand

• Lucite pillars (cylinders), colourful round gems + lucite heart blocks, square mini clear acrylic building platform - My Little Creator

• Lucite rectangles - Busy Little Bundles

• DIY mirror reflective building circles - see the blog post here to make your own

How to set it up:

• Set up the child safe mirror on a flat surface - a table or the floor.

• Add in baskets or containers of materials to explore on the mirror surface e.g. blocks, other loose parts. I colour sorted our blocks to make them look more inviting!

• For younger children 3+ you may wish/need to show some possible ways to play with the resources, for older children let them explore in their own way. There is no right or wrong way to play with this.

Possibilities for Learning Through Play:

• Science - exploring colour mixing and sun light through the blocks

• Building - stacking, creating different towers and buildings

• Fine motor skills

• Hand eye-cordination

• Colour identification + colour matching

• Small world play (when figurines are added in)

• Creativity - deciding how to play and what to build or create

• Critical thinking skills - should I add another block? Is this tower stable or will it fall? How should I place this block on top so that the tower stays standing?

• Art - creating loose parts transient (moveable) art with the pieces

• Exploring reflections in the mirror

Simple stacking of the blocks is fun on the mirror surface

The blocks can be stacked up to make tall towers by older children.

Ideas for Extending the Play:

• Add in some small figurines to encourage some small world play

• Add in some different resources e.g. loose parts that can be used in different ways to add more creativity to their play

• If some materials aren't being used e.g. the wooden rainbow blocks - show how they might be used to build to spark play.

Adding in some little figurines is a fun way to extend the play!
