Here's a look at a couple of our favourite art materials that we just restocked ready for creating ...
Creativity is important in our home and something that I intentionally think about when setting up our spaces at home for play and creating.
Having a range of choices of art materials available for my kids to create with is important. I make sure that we have lots of colour options and different materials to create and experiment with. Our art materials have grown over time - start with what you have and add over time!
I think this also adds to their creativity as they always have access to a range of things that they can freely create with whenever they feel inspired.
Here's a look at some of our favourite art materials for creating with kids that we just restocked ready for creating. I know I found it confusing deciding what to buy when trying new art supplies so I thought that this may be helpful for someone.
*IMPORTANT: These are supplies are recommended for children ages 3+ as they contain small parts which may pose a choking hazard. It is your responsibility to determine the suitability of these ideas for your child. Please ensure all play/creating is supervised by an adult.
Art Materials for Drawing and Colouring
Crayola Textas
We added two new packs of Crayola textas into our art supplies. Our old ones were running out and it was frustrating when trying to draw and colour with them.
This time I bought The Big 40 pack of Washable Markers Crayola. We normally buy a smaller pack of these, but I decided that I wanted my girls to be able to create with a wider range of colours.
It hasn't disappointed with more colour choices than we are used to, which my girls are enjoying lots!
The second pack of textas that I refilled are the Crayola Super Tips Washable Markers 20 pack. We've had these ones before. They are good for drawing thinner lines and colouring in small spaces.
Our textas are currently stored in a clear spinning divided lazy susan from Kmart Australia. I added in the coloured mini Tubtrugs that I bought many years ago to colour sort them. We also have our dot markers in these tubs too.
This is working well because they can grab the whole container to take to where they are creating + spin it around easily to find the colour that they need.
We previously had our textas stored in this bamboo container from Kmart Australia in the kitchen section, separated into colours by these plastic candy jars (also from Kmart Australia). This worked well too as it was easy to pick up and move to the table or another area to draw/colour.
Twistable Crayons
These are a favourite drawing material with the 2 older girls. We have had some of these crayons previously sent home from school at the end of the year. We just added some new ones as the pink and red had run out.
They are a drawing material that I have always had in my classroom too. They are easy to colour with and the kids enjoy using them.
I bought 2 different packs - Crayola Twistables Crayons 12 pack and Staedtler Noris 12 Pack of twistable crayons.
Ours are stored in a container all together, as this is the way that my girls use these the most. They get the container of the crayons and take it to where ever they are drawing/creating. I find that they use these roller crayons more often than coloured pencils.
We also have the Crayola Colours of the World pencils in this container. These are brilliant for drawing people with different skin colours and teaching about diversity. They would be a must have for the classroom too! We also have the crayons, but I found that lots of them ended up snapped.
White A4 paper
We added in a ream of white A4 copy paper. This is kept in a paper drawer that the girls can access whenever they like.
We also have coloured A4 and A5 paper available for them to create with.
Other Tips:
Offer a range of paper sizes to create on.
I hadn't actually thought about this in a while, but the girls asked for A3 sized paper to create bigger drawings on with the new textas.
It was a great reminder to provide opportnutnies to create on a range of paper sizes e.g. A4, A3, A5 even A2!

Favourite Art Materials for Creating with Kids

These are just a few of our favourite art supplies. My girls have been loving having more colours to choose from in the textas for their drawings and colouring-in too! The container makes it easy for them to move it to our dining table to draw/colour with too.
