Let’s make some of our own little loose parts perfect for all kinds of creative play!
Loose parts don’t need to be expensive!
A little while back we made some of our own little DIY colourful loose parts using watercolour paint and some wooden cubes, circles and stars that we found at a discount store. It was an easy craft project that we did over several days.
They are perfect for some fun loose parts play and were inexpensive to make too!
*Important - Play/craft idea for ages 3+ as uses small pieces. Adult supervision necessary.
The girls have enjoyed playing with them, building little houses. They even decided to draw some windows and doors on some of the unpainted cubes.

A few tips:
Get the kids involved - both my girls enjoyed helping. It was a little bit tricky for Miss 4 because the squares were quite small. She still enjoyed having a go with some help.
Our little wooden pieces were from Passtime Crafts. Other craft stores/discount stores would sell these types of wooden pieces too. Spotlight sells mini wooden cubes.
We used baking paper underneath on our tray so that they didn’t stick while the paint dried.
Paint a few sides first, let dry and do the other sides.
Some may need few more coats of paint 🎨
We found that IKEA watercolour palettes worked the best and needed less coats of paint.
We store ours in little plastic candy jars from Kmart Australia - they look pretty colour sorted!
What do you think? Would you give this a try?
I hope you found some inspiration today for making your own colourful loose parts! If you know someone else who might like to make these please share this post with them.
